Pastor Steve was born on July 14, 1960, in Rockingham County, Virginia. He is the middle child of Five Children. He worked on a dairy Farm until he was 21. He graduated from Broadway High School in 1978 and received his undergraduate degree from Bridgewater College in 1983. He received his Master of Divinity Degree from Eastern Mennonite Seminary in Harrisonburg, Virginia, in 1993. Between College and seminary, he got married and worked as a carpenter under a private contractor who built custom homes in the Harrisonburg Area while serving as a Youth Pastor at Dayton UMC in Dayton, Virginia.
He and April have been married for 38 years. They have two grown children.
We began our ministry in 1990. In 1994 he became an Elder in Full Connection in Virginia. He and April have been in the pastoral ministry for 33 years. He has served 4 churches those years; Stanley UMC (served 4 years) in the Harrisonburg District, Pleasant Grove (served 8 years) in the Danville District, Mint Spring (served 8 years) in the Staunton District, and Mountain View (served 13 years) in the Lynchburg District. In addition to serving at Court Street UMC, he is serving at Salem UMC near Bedford as a part-time pastor, where he preaches on Sunday mornings.
Pastor Steve's hobbies include hunting, gardening, cutting firewood, carpentry/building, and small engine repair.
He is a genuinely friendly person who is down to earth. His leadership strengths are around relationships and relationship building/strengthening.
He loves being involved in diverse kinds of missions from serving at a food kitchen to creating missions’ teams that embark on mission trips that offer the love of Christ to those that are the “least” among us. He is enthusiastic about preaching the word of God and helping individuals to grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ. He likes to teach Bible Studies but, not as a lecturer rather as a facilitator. He believes that it is vital to our spiritual growth to be intentional in prayer and Bible Study.
Finally, he believes it is vital that a pastor join hands with the congregation they are called to serve by working side by side with them. You will find that he is an energetic person who loves doing “hands-on” activities with others. So, he feels it is important to stay involved in the activities of the church. He is looking forward to sharing in ministry with the congregation at Court Street.
“I am excited about my new ministry here at Court Street and am anxious to meet everyone. I hope all of you will come to worship with us on Sundays and stop by my office during the week to give me an opportunity to get to know you and to work with you. I look forward to serving God, Court Street UMC, and all of you for many years to come.”
