After 174 years of faithful ministry in the heart of Lynchburg, Court Street United Methodist Church held its final worship service on Sunday, June 22, 2025.
With deep gratitude for generations of worship, service, mission, music, and fellowship, we give thanks for the countless lives touched through this congregation. Though the doors of the church building have closed, the light, hope, and love of Christ that shone from this place continue to live on in the hearts of those who were part of its story.
As we conclude this chapter, we remain committed to ensuring that the legacy of Court Street continues through the distribution of our estate sale proceeds to support local nonprofits and ministries, furthering the work of compassion and justice in our community.
Thank you for being part of our journey. Grace and peace to you in all the seasons to come.
Here is our closing poem, written for and read at the final service on June 22nd, 2025:
“This Holy Place”
By Julia Morris
This holy place, where hearts have knelt,
Where prayers were whispered, praises felt.
The walls have echoed joy and tears,
The hopes and dreams of countless years.
Yet Church is more than stone and beam,
It’s love that flows, a living stream.
A people called to serve and go,
To spread the light, the seeds we sow.
We leave this space, but not our call,
For God’s great work lives in us all.
With faith to guide and hearts to dare,
We’ll find His Church in everywhere.
So let us go with light, hope, love,
Empowered by His grace above.
And carry forth what we’ve begun,
Until His kingdom’s work is done.
